2017 I.J. Allen Scholars Announced

As a teenager, former bank president, I.J. Allen (1883-1980) left his hometown of Ansley on a freight train with aspirations that could not be suppressed by his limited third grade education.  Driven by his entrepreneurial desires, he worked hard and found success in his many business endeavors, which culminated in an investment in Jonesboro State Bank during the Great Depression.  I.J. impressed on his children and grandchildren the importance of an education.  As a man without a formal education, he knew all too well the value of bettering oneself in the classroom.  The bank awards memorial scholarships each year to graduating seniors.  This year's recipients are as follows:

Plans to attend University of Louisiana, Monroe: College of Health & Pharmaceutical Sciences

Ruben Hatfield

$4,000 recipient
Plans to attend Louisiana Tech University: College of Engineering & Science

Jamus Patterson

Jonesboro Hodge High School
$3,000 recipient
Plans to attend McNeese State University: College of Science & Agriculture
